When choosing an architect, draughtsman or tradesman, look at a few, ask for references and check out their work. Better still, have one recommended by someone you know. Carters recommends you use contractors who are members of the Registered Master Builders Federation, Master Plumbers or Painting Contractors Association.

Keep a diary of events/progress and discussion with tradesmen and suppliers.
