The bad news about Fire
Did
you know Fire Service statistics show that, on average, 550 New
Zealanders are killed or injured in fires every year. Most
people do not understand the true nature of house fires, which
can be summed up in 4 points:
1. Fire is black. In a real fire you are blind. You cannot
see the fire, it is black, hot and scary. The blackness can
completely disorientate you.
2. A fire's smoke will kill you. When you are asleep you
cannot smell. The smell of fire will not awaken you. Carbon
monoxide will numb your brain and you will die in your sleep.
3. Heat alone will kill you. It is deadly. The heat of a fire
can kill you in seconds. One breath can burn your lungs and your
body will shut down. You don't even have to be near the flames.
4. There is no time to think. During a fire time is your
biggest enemy. You must act quickly. Without an escape plan you
are trapped. You must have a plan. |
