Build a Workbench
If you build yourself a good, strong workbench it will make a difference to every DIY job you do. It's easier than you think and Carters have everything you need to build it properly. Please read this sheet carefully before you begin, follow the simple steps, and if you need any further help or advice, please don't hesitate to ask at your local Carters Branch.

Step 1
Lay out your three sheets and mark out the measurements as per the cutting plans (see below).

Step 2
Cut out the panels.

Step 3
Clean-up the cut edges with sandpaper, first with 80 grit then 180 grit.

Step 4
Drill pilot holes at 400mm centres and screw pieces B & C to A. Both B & C must be screwed through their face and into the edges of A. This forms the top of your workbench.

Step 5
Drill pilot holes at 200mm centres and screw pieces D & E to F & G to form the legs. Both D & E must be screwed through their face and into the edge of F & G, the leg supports.

Step 6
Bracing (Optional). Two pieces of Radiata 100x50mm gauged dry framing can be attached under the bench top between the assembled legs (see below), at the top so that the bench top A can be screwed into the bracing. Also screw F & G leg supports into the ends of the 100x50mm bracing.

Step 7
We recommend that the legs are positioned 600mm in from each end of the bench top. Drill pilot holes at 200mm centres and screw the bench top into the leg supports F & G.

Step 8
Using 8 gauge x 30mm twinfast screws fix the legs into B from the back of D & E. Use 4 screws for each leg.

Step 9
Finishing (Optional). You may wish to use wood filler (particleboard colour) to fill the countersunk screws - when dry sand smooth. Note: the countersunk holes will need to be deeper if you decide to use a filler. Your workbench is now ready for finishing: use a wood sealer or polyurethane. Ask at your local Carters Branch for advice on available finishes.

If you wish, position your workbench against a wall and fix to the wall through the upstand - this will provide extra support for any large heavy projects.
